Mount Vernon Nazarene University?s art and design department is growing.

Two years ago, the Buchwald Center, including the modern Schnormeier Gallery, opened
downtown on historic Main Street, becoming a cultural capital for
students and other residents of Knox County.

Although the department tipped its hat to Jim and Jan Hendrickx
last spring as they concluded their final year as MVNU faculty members, it now welcomes three new members.

?To replace Jim and Jan Hendrickx would be impossible,? said department chair John Donnelly.

?We are, however, looking forward as our new faculty members join us.?

This fall, MVNU welcomed Andrew Hendrixson, Margaret Allotey-Pappoe and adjunct professor Andrea Forster as agents towards the further growth of the department and members of the campus community.

MVNU alumnus Andrew Hendrixson received a master?s degree of fine arts in painting and drawing from the University of Florida in August of 2011.

This summer, his work was exhibited in the Manifesto Gallery in Cincinnati and in the First Street Gallery, located in the Chelsea area of New York.

Each year the Manifesto Gallery features a few recent graduates from across the country.

Hendrixson?s work, along with the other featured artists, will be published in a full-color catalog to be released this spring.

?My time at MVNU as a student was very formative, and I am honored to be a part of this community once again,? said Hendrixson.

?I learned a great deal from my professors while I was a student here, and I am humbled to now be responsible for influencing and mentoring students.?

Margaret Allotey-Pappoe joined MVNU from Ghana, West Africa, by way of a master of fine arts degree in design from Bradley University, Peoria, Ill.

?As a Christian campus, MVNU fit my criteria,? commented Allotey-Pappoe. ?Everyone was so polite and positive.?

She stated that MVNU is a place where she feels she can ?thrive.?

?Our vision for MVNU?s design program has widened with her addition,? said Donnelly.

Allotey-Pappoe hopes that graphic design students will have experiences that go beyond design skills.

In implementing a new curriculum that includes print, video and web media? ?anything that exists on a screen,? students will have a widened grasp on what visual communication is in a variety of mediums.

Her experiences, as she comes to MVNU from a different country, also bring something unique to the table.

?Allotey-Pappoe?s world view is diverse and invigorating,? Donnelly stated.

Andrea Forster, also an MVNU alumna, joined the department as an adjunct, teaching art history.

She received a master of fine arts in art history from Ohio University and also teaches online courses with the University of Phoenix.

Prior to this position, she worked for 10 years as a high school and middle school art teacher in Atlanta, Ga.

?I was very excited to teach in a college environment,? Forster said. ?I love that I can teach and see students respond with interest to the study matter, as if they are there with me.?

?We are welcoming a lot of diversity,? Donnelly said.

?With younger faculty, including two strong women, we are experiencing fresh ideas and contagious energy levels within the department.?

With their help, he expressed, the curriculum will only strengthen in its ?rigor and relevance.?

MVNU is not only welcoming seasoned and accomplished artists and scholars, but ?this is a professional group of educators and mentors,? Donnelly stated.
