Black hole emits humongous energy burst (+video)
An unusual brightness, documented by NASA’s Chandra telescope appears to be coming from a black hole.
A NASA space telescope has detected an incredible energy burst from a distant black hole, an explosion so intense that it boosted the black hole’s X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times, scientists say.

The outburst came from a black hole in the spiral galaxy M83, about 15 million light-years away from Earth. Using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers found a new object, called an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), ?that emits more X-rays than most “normal” systems in which a companion star orbits around a black hole or neutron star, the researchers said.
The observations from Chandra spanned several years, and scientists noticed that the ULX in M83 increased its X-ray brightness by at least 3,000 times.
This surprisingly sudden brightening is one of the largest changes in X-rays ever seen for this type of object, according to the researchers. In fact, ultraluminous X-ray sources do not typically have periods of dormancy. [Photos: Black Holes of the Universe]
In the accompanying image, the left is an optical view of M83. On the right is a composite image showing X-ray data from Chandra in pink and optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope in blue and yellow. The ULX is located near the bottom of the composite image.?
Optical images of the black hole in M83 were taken by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. These images revealed a bright blue source where the ULX is located during the X-ray outburst. Yet, before the outburst, this blue source cannot be seen, the scientists said.
The discrepancy suggests that the companion to the black hole in M83 is a red giant star that is more than 50 million years old. The mass of this object is less than four times the mass of the sun, and according to theoretical models that predict the evolution of stars, the black hole in M83 should be almost as old as this companion red giant star.
The bright blue emission that could be seen during the X-ray outburst could be the black hole’s disk brightening significantly as it acquires more material from its companion star, the astronomers said.
Another strangely behaved ULX from a black hole with an old, companion red giant star was found recently in the galaxy M31. These new discoveries in M83 and M31 show that there could be a population of similar black holes that are older and more volatile, the researchers said.
The mass of the ULX in M83 is estimated to be between 40 to 100 times the mass of the sun.
The astronomers also found that the black hole in this system may have formed from a star surprisingly rich in “metals,” or elements that are heavier than helium. Based on previous observations, the ULX is located in a metal-rich region.
Large concentrations of metals increase the rate of mass lost from massive stars, siphoning mass before they collapse. This also decreases the mass of the resulting black hole.
Current theoretical models suggest that in regions highly rich in metals, only black holes with masses less than about 15 times that of the sun should form. As a result, the findings based on the ULX in M83 could dispute these models, the researchers said.
Another plausible explanation is that the black hole is so old that it formed at a time when heavy elements were much less abundant in M83, before metals were sprinkled throughout by later generations of supernovas. Astronomers are also investigating the possibility that the mass of the black hole in M83 is only about 15 times that of the sun.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? “Neighborhood Watch” will now be known as just “The Watch.”
Fox said Friday that the name of the film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as suburban neighborhood watch volunteers who uncover an extraterrestrial plot was changed in light of the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Florida.
“As the subject matter of this alien invasion comedy bears no relation whatsoever to the recent tragic events in Florida, the studio altered the title to avoid any accidental or unintended misimpression that it might,” the studio said in a statement.
Fox previously pulled early promotional materials for the movie because of the Trayvon Martin case.
The unarmed, 17-year-old Martin was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26, causing a national controversy.
“The Watch” is set for release July 27.

Create Your Own Pension Plan? | GCA Equity Partners
The average investor has a difficult time making sense of what is going on in the financial markets. Many feel that it is time to take matters into their own hands by evaluating old 401Ks, investment diversification and real estate funds
In my grandfather?s generation, most middle class Americans with good jobs could count on working for a single company for thirty or forty years and then retiring at the end with nice little pensions. Those who had managed their money well and paid off their mortgages could often count on their pensions to provide a reasonably comfortable existence for the rest of their lives.
Unfortunately for workers, companies (and now some government agencies) have come to realize that funding traditional pensions (sometimes also called ?defined benefit retirement plans?) is expensive and can create big liabilities when the plans are not properly managed. The net result has been a big shift towards ?defined contribution? plans such as the now common and well-known 401K. With a 401K plan, a company can shift the burden of planning for the future from themselves to their employees.
So ? here?s the question?can we create our own pensions, using 401K plans and other tools available to us, with characteristics similar to the pensions of our grandfather?s generation? If we could, here?s a short list of the features we would want them to have:
- Manageable contribution levels during our working years
- Generate a reasonable income in retirement
- Have a high probability of delivering the expected income
Is it possible to actually have all of those features, though? I believe that the answer is a resounding ?yes?, but not without a little bit of work. Here?s what we need to do:
- Get all of our money working hard for us
- Choose the right investment options
- Diversify our investment portfolio appropriately
And here?s how to do it:
Step 1: Identify any old 401K plans (accounts with previous employers) and roll them into a self-directed IRA at any number of third-party IRA Custodians permitting alternative investments.
Step 2:?Educate ourselves on the many alternative investment options with the potential to outperform traditional investment choices. Get comfortable with a particular category (for example, oil and gas master limited partnerships or real estate) and distribute our self-directed money into a carefully chosen mix of funds. Be sure to understand the fee structures, risk profiles, and return potentials of each.
Step 3:?Review the investment elections in our current 401K accounts using any number of web-based tools available and re-allocate our investment choices to get the best chance of solid long-term performance. Also be sure that we are maximizing any contributions that are company-matched.
Step 4:?Review investment elections for all of our cash investments, and re-allocate as noted above.
Step 5:?Review our entire investment portfolio (self-directed IRA, 401K, and cash) ? looking for too much overlap in any one area. Categories that can be considered different enough to provide some degree of diversification are domestic stocks, international stocks, government bonds, oil & gas, real estate, and annuities. Re-allocate choices appropriately.
A few more items to keep in mind during our portfolio review:
- Alternative investments can have better risk/return profiles than traditional investments, simply because you are competing with a smaller pool of potential investors.
- Idle cash (in any account) isn?t doing anything for us, except losing a little more value every day. Find good investments and put your money to work!
- Investing in just one category, or even two categories, provides very little protection from diversification. It?s best to have money in three or more ?low-correlation? categories.
If we all were to do each of these steps, we have the potential to create our own private pensions with solid long-term performance, reasonable cash flow in retirement, and a good chance of actually being there when we need it.

Justin Bieber will show off an even swaggier side of himself tonight when he premieres his “Boyfriend” video on MTV. Before the premiere, Bieber gave fans a sneak peek of the sunny party clip.
The teaser features Bieber snuggling with a very pretty young lady, surrounded by muscle cars and his pals. It was that straightforward concept that intrigued the pop star and his team.
“It was just cars and the simplicity that they liked. Cars, girls, just young people hanging out, having fun, that kind of thing. When I heard it, I thought that’s what it should be,” Director X, who helmed the clip, told MTV News. “From what they wanted to do with Justin and the song and who he is and his age now, I thought that was it. They should expect the Justin they know, just a little more grown-up.”
While he had never worked with the singer before, he admits that, like everyone else in the world, he was fully aware of who Bieber is. “I’ve seen him. I mean, he’s Justin Bieber. There’s no way you don’t know who the kid is, but I’ve never worked with him before or met him before. So my exposure to him is the way any other TV watcher, Internet watcher would know him,” he said, adding that he left the April video shoot a fan. “He’s a good kid. He comes to work, gets the job done, dedicated to the gig. I mean, I like him.”
